Other species often confused with lichen

Organisms that look confusingly similar to lichen, and often grow in the same environments.

Moss

Local species

Fungi that parasitize lichen

They feed off of the lichen, and can be seen growing on top of lichen. These are called lichenicolous fungi.

Plain fungi

Non-lichenized fungi sometimes appear as black spots that are rounded or elongated. (TODO: I found this reference in one of my field guides. Do we have more information on this?)

Terrestrial algae

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Terrestrial_algae

This algae can grow on its own in terrestrial environments. Sometimes this is the same algae that can also form symbiotic relationships in lichen.

TODO — Terrestrial algae

Potentially continue adding these to [[Category:Terrestrial algae]]:

* Indicates that only some of this group are terrestrial.
