The traditional meaning of the prefix trans- is:
- across, beyond (transit, transcontinental, transgress)
- on or to the other side of (transverse, transatlantic, transport)
- into another state or place (translate, transform, transpose)
However, the queer community uses transgender as a catch-all for all kinds of gender-variant people. The traditional meaning of the trans- prefix doesn't match people who consider themselves to lie in the middle of the spectrum (though it may apply to people who consider themselves totally off the spectrum).
