It can be useful to be able to make a copy of game saves, and then be able to restore them.

without being root

Usually you need to be root to do this. See here for more.

However, there IS one way to do it without being root:

• Connect your Android phone to your desktop computer, using USB Developer mode. [1] [2] [3]
  • you'll need to download ADB to your desktop computer, as part of this
  • on Android 4.2 and higher, you have to click on the "Build Number" seven times to activate the Developer menu
  • if "adb devices" says "offline", here's a lot of different advice to try to solve it
• Use the adb backup command to take a backup image of your phone.
  • as another tool notes, "ADB Backup itself is rather buggy so it will often fail on many devices, and may not work at all on some"
  • "adb backup" is supposed to be able to backup the data for a specific application, but this appears to not work at all on the S4 (the backup file it produces is essentially empty).
• The backup image is essentially a .tar file (though it may take a small bit of work to convert it to a .tar file that normal tar tools can use) [1] [2]
