- to disable the login sound (that plays when the GDM greeter comes up):
- System > Administration > Login Window > Accessibility[tab] > uncheck 'Login screen ready' (screenshot)
- a bug was filed to put this option in the normal 'sounds' settings dialog, but the bug was rejected :(
