Before we dive into specific pieces of advice, there are a few places that offer a long list of of advice on what should be considered "best practice":

• Perl::Critic::Policy::* modules, as well as third-party add-ons
• several things published by chromatic:
  • Modern::Perl, a module that "enables all of the features of modern Perl with one import"
  • Modern Perl, a book whose fourth edition was published in Nov 2015
  • the blog associated with the book
• Perl Best Practices, a book published in 2005 by Damian Conway
• maybe perlbuzz.com?

Obviously, when accepting advice from random people on the internet, it's a good idea to take these with a grain of salt.

Specific things that I've seen others recommend:

• operator overloading
  • operator overloading across all languages has been criticized:
    • blurb on Wikipedia
    • by Elliotte Rusty Harold
  • specifically regarding Perl's operator overloading:
    • the book Perl Best Practices, published in 2005, recommends against using them in most cases (pirated copy)
    • Dave Rolsky has several arguments for why they're a bad idea
