a foot switch, to turn an appliance on/off

These should be push-on and push-off, not momentary.   (I believe these are described as 'maintained' or 'latching')

"I had expected it to be a push-on, push-off unit, but it operates more like a rocker switch. You press near the top of it to turn on, and near the bottom of it to turn off. Simple and easy to use once you get used to pushing it forward or back in a rocking movement."

"Although I gave the other brand a very favorable review, I've come to prefer this one. In comparison, It’s more compact, less clunky; it’s basically metal; and the plug and power cord are combined so it’s tidier. I’m going to order two more. Once you use a foot switch, you can’t imagine not having one; this one’s a keeper."

I think these terms mean "push-on, push-off":

And these mean "push and hold for on, release for off":
