Project proposal — High-limb wire saw

Current state of the art

These two things exist:

• Hand-powered wood saws — Variously described as a 🔍rope saw, 🔍pocket chainsaw, or 🔍Nordic pocket saw. These usually use a chainsaw-style blade, though a few use something closer to a wire rope.
• Machine-powered wire saws — Used at an industrial level for cutting large blocks of stone and metal, for small semiconductors, and more.

My goal

My goal is to be able to do place a line up in a tree (using standard arborist throwline techniques), and then cut a branch up there while I stay on the ground.

Research

Note that there are a few products that are intended to be used for high-limb sawing, that nonetheless use a chainsaw-style cutter:

  • Note that he does say it works well, but only if you use two people. I wonder if using two pulleys might make it doable for a single person.
