backsaws

I love backsaws, they cut straight and true. Yes, they're limited to cutting a few inches deep, at most. But the part of hand-saws in general (versus power saws) that I struggle with the most is making sure everything is lined up correctly when first establishing any cut, and temporarily switching to a backsaw for that solves most of my problems.

Japanese backsaws

Types of Japanese saws that sometimes have a back:

• Dozuki — Designed for fine joinery like dovetails and tenons.
• Kataba — (Rarely has a back)   Made for crosscuts.
• Note that most rip saws with a back, that are available in the US, aren't true rip saws.
