Reducing hazardous wood dust in a wood shop located inside a residence
Because my wood shop is located in a residential space, it's critical to spend some real effort and money to reduce hazardous wood dust.
I use an air quality monitor to know in real-time what's actually working and what isn't.
Real problems identified
Fans near the floor — If the room hasn't had significant activity in it for a while (more than a week?), and a floor fan is turned on, then this causes the PM2.5 to suddenly spike for an hour or two. Most likely, fine wood dust had slowly settled on the floor, and the floor fan pumps all that into the air all at once.
Possible solutions — Install a good air filtration system. [2] Manually vacuum with a vacuum that has a HEPA filter. Use only desk fans or pedestal fans, never floor fans.
