Rob Cosman made a video about how he adds texture to tool handles. He has a two-step process:
Layer 1) Twist hockey tape and apply in a spiral pattern, then go back and cover it up. This layer lasts a long time.
Layer 2) Add a layer of cohesive wrap. This adds some cushion and even more grip. This layer needs to be replaced more frequently than the first layer. Since cohesive wrap only sticks to itself, it's easy to remove when the time comes.
