There are many ways to remove a stump. One of my favorites is to leave the trunk in place, use it as a lever, and pull at it until the roots come out.
I don't think that everyone appreciates how significant of a force-multiplier you get if you leave part of the trunk intact, and pull as high on that trunk as possible.
