- if you get the thing where text is gigantic, and the stroke width is way bigger than it should be, etc...
    Create a new document, and copy-n-paste the current vector stuff into the
    new document, and resave, and you'll no longer have this problem.
    I believe the problem is related to the fact that SVG has, as one of its
    features, the ability to scale things based on the size of the total image...  (eg. if you go in and change JUST the width/height of the image in the SVG, everything else changes too)
    so this isn't an Inkscape bug, but it's also not always a desirable feature.

- if, after converting with pstoedit, there are large black boxes...
    Then use repeated alt+click to select the black box, Ctrl+F and change it to a white background.
    Hopefully there aren't too many of these, and without much effort, it looks normal again.
