PhpBB is popular software for running forums.

Ways to get traffic statistics for any phpBB forum:

• At the bottom of the front page, forums almost always list a short section with:
  • total posts — these are individual comments, not threads
  • total topics — individual threads
  • total members — Total number of registered users, regardless of whether they're active.
  • most users ever online — "at one time", I presume
• /index.php?action=stats might be available
  • The last section is a yearly summary of page views, new topics, etc
