I'm always discovering new fields that I suddenly realize are cool, that I thought weren't interesting before.

Although it's true that physical design can get bogged down in tons of irritating real-world practicalities, it's also true that sometimes there are VERY LARGE conceptual problems that are faced, and they can sometimes be solved in very creative and out-of-the-box methods. Moreover, these highly creative solutions aren't just "ivory tower ruminations", they're solutions that can profoundly impact whether the project gets funded or not, i.e. they're solutions that get tested pretty much RIGHT AWAY, so it's doubly satisfying because you get immediate feedback about how useful your idea really actually is. When people have huge investments on the line, they're willing to pony up the money to rigorously test your design ideas.)
