Loopback plugs can be helpful in some circumstances to confirm that, at the very least, the serial port is work. They're very easy to construct myself.

Connecting a null cable to yourself and reading the output can also be useful. It allows you to read from a different program, and can confirm that the baud rate and such are correct.

Passthrough: add a logging device/computer in between the two sides, which logs and passes on the data to the other side. Requires two null modem cables.
