Piclist recommends a 10x Hastings Triplet Magnifier for use with surface mount stuff, though it may apply to other soldering as well. This page has further advice on triplet magnifiers, along with some reviews of specific ones (though don't necessarily trust his review of the bolero, I haven't found too much concurring opinion, and the main place to buy it is from his own site ("another shameless self-advertisement"). This guy generally concurs.
