- Mirroring gauges. Gauges are presumably usually encoded in PWM. I'm not sure what frequency range is used, but I presume it's less than 1MHz, and therefore, can be counted in a rather straightforward way via a PIC µC. A good example of doing this can be found here (practical range: 10Hz - 300kHz).
- OBD-II interfacing. This company provides a PIC chip interface, so it should be possible to find the circuit on the 'net.
