THis guy sells 200milliamp max 20microamp standby power supplies, no mention of what the circuit is, but a picture is included
Low DropOut (LDO) — ouput voltage can be very close to input voltage
Looks like switching regulators are what I want, they usually come in an 8-DIP package (as in the picture from the guy above). They have some downsides, we'll have to see if I can live with them. The basics of switching regulators are covered here.
- LM2574 — 5v, step-down, max 500ma, 4 external components, 4% output voltage tolerance, 8-DIP.
- LM2674 — 5v, step-down, max 500ma, 5 external components, 1.5% output voltage tolerance, 8-DIP.
- MAX631 — 5v, step-up, max 50ma, 2 external components, 5% output voltage tolerance, 8-DIP.
