The deluge myth is a widespread theme across many cultues. It's hypothesized that this is because there have been many large-scale flooding events all around the world.

Further, it's suggested that this could be one possible way to try to counter one symptom of global warming: rising ocean levels. This is because there are several extant dry areas below sea level (called a "sink" by biologists). It would actually require (relatively, compared to the benefit gained) little effort required to dig a water channel from the ocean to the sink in question.

This stuff is REALLY interesting. Apparently there's evidence that the Mediteranian has gone through many cycles of evaporation and flooding.
