The word "gay" is frequently used as a pejorative by straight people, and sometimes mockingly by gay people.
Like other group labels that have been used derogatively ("jewish", "retarded"), it's something that will either either be reclaimed and have its negative meaning be reduced... or it will be abandoned to the euphemism treadmill.
