Many of the concerns about nuclear power center around the question of what to do with the spent fuel.

There are two main long-term options: 1) it can be buried or otherwise permanently stored somewhere, or 2) it can be reprocessed, removing the radioactive materials so the less-radioactive portion can be more easily burried.

Geological burial

There have been many proposals for storage sites. To date, however, only a few have been opened:
  1. Schacht Asse II, accepted waste from 1967 to 1977
  2. ERAM (Morsleben repository), accepted waste from 1971 to 1998
  3. Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, has accepted waste since 1999
  4. Onkalo [Finland], has accepted waste since 0
