That the two are inherently in conflict is not widely agreed upon (worldwide, at least... in the U.S., it seems to be a common view).
Anyway, the conflict has a long history.
- 1559 — the Catholic List of Prohibited Books included many Enlightenment-era scientific works as soon as they were published
