Hunting dogs have a remotely-activatable beeper collar (so when they do retrieving, and go a long distance from the hunter, the hunter can still locate them). However, they're usually pretty bulky.
What is an alternative for cats?
Why do I want this? I want to allow my cats to wander outside. However, I live in a fairly dense urban area, with lots of locked fences that the cats can slip through. If they happen to slip through someone's fence, I want to at least know where they're at, even if I can't physically reach them.
- attach something to a proper cat harness
- If you go to the store, there are a lot of "small dog" harnesses, but I've had problems using them on cats. Buying a cat-specific one online might be a better idea, since they're somewhat rare in local stores.
- wireless key finders are a somewhat established product-category that there are some lower-priced options
