Defintions
- assigned gender
- The gender someone was assigned at birth. The gender that others pressumed they would be, based on the incorrect assumption that everyone's sex and gender matches.
- AMAB, AFAB
- Assigned male at birth, assigned female at birth. These are alternate descriptors to MTF or FTM, since the latter tend to encourage others to emphasize someone's gender assignment. Placing more emphasis on someone's gender assignment than their lived gender is very inappropriate.
- trans woman
- Someone who was assigned male at birth, but who identifies as female.
Often someone chooses the label "trans woman" instead of "trans feminine" if they feel more binary.
- trans feminine
- Someone who was assigned male at birth, but identifies as more femimine than their assigned gender.
When used to describe a group of people, "trans feminine" may be used in an inclusive way, as a catch-all term that includes both binary identities and non-binary identities (both trans women and AMAB genderqueer folks). When used to describe an individual, it may be used to distinguish that individual from trans women, to specifically indicate that they feel non-binary.
- trans man
- Someone who was assigned female at birth, but who identifies as male.
Often someone choses the label "trans man" instead of "trans masculine" if they feel more binary.
- trans masculine
- Someone who was assigned female, but who identifies as more masculine. As a collective descriptor, it may include binary and non-binary folks. As an individual descriptor, it's usually used to distinguish themself from trans men.
