It's paradoxically easier to wear outrageous clothing than it is to wear more moderate clothing. This is because it's easier to wear a mask than it is to show your true self. Showing your true self requires you to 1) know thyself, and 2) be comfortable/accepting of yourself, while wearing a mask requires no such thoughtfulness.

I like being subversively political more than most, but there's a time and place for that, and there's a time and place for being authentic. If you can never be authentic, if only to yourself, then you have a serious problem.
