One thing I've heard from many queer people, especially those who are non-GLB (eg. TG/TS, intersex, asexual, ...), is that they wish academic writers wouldn't try to use them (as a collective social group) as a foil for examining their latest theory about gender/sexuality.

Doing this 1) is yet another example of an academic outsider suggesting they can speak for insiders, and 2) it erases the fact that they are individuals, and have complex lives, where no single facet of their life outweighs the others.
