I believe that part of the assimulation mindset comes from privileged folks who 1) don't recognize their own privilege (which is the way privilege works, but meh), 2) thus aren't able to see that only a few people in their movement have the same privilege as them, and then 3) tout the idea that YOU TOO can get acceptance from the rest of society, if you'll just do the the things that I did (be white, be upper-middle class, be well-educated, don't be dependent on help from family members, be a consumer).
- the "It Gets Better" campaign is a pretty white upper-middle-class campaign
