Things to add to the wiki shortly before the presentation:
Pallets
buying pallets
There are quite a few places in Chicago that sell pallets (new/used/refurbished/etc). Ones we've bought from before:
- Commercial Pallet, 2029 W Hubbard St, 312-226-6699
They definitely look like they don't usually have many walk-ins (mainly they deliver pallets to customers), but they were very friendly and helpful even when I (David Newcum) wanted to buy only one at a time.
transporting pallets
Most companies do deliver pallets, but it may save money if you pick them up.
Most pallets can't fit through car doors. A hatchback is very much preferred. David Newcum's sister has a hatchback that FreeGeek is sometimes able to use for this purpose.
using the elevator
You need to first make sure the elevator pads are installed on the walls, and that the floor mat is fully covering the floor. (the pallet jack can EASILY mar the normal floor surface). Also, if you're moving a lot of things, you may want to tape several layers of cardboard around the entrance and exit of the elevator (see "Dent Prevent" here)
While transporting pallets in the elevator, MAKE SURE you don't exceed the weight ratings (2500 lbs).
