- glxgears
- phoronix
- any openGL game that report FPS
- most xscreensavers support the --fps option (and are nice because they don't take tremendous resources)
issues
- glxgears is available on SLAX. However, it has several problems:
- most problematic is that glxgears will report non-rendered frames as super-fast frames! This can happen if the window is covered up, but I often see it happen whenever it loses vsync. On our super-slow machines, this happens whenever it has to read the CD-ROM drive.
- Is there any way to prevent it from losing vsync? Or, rather, could
- an oft-cited problem is that glxgears tests very little of the graphic card's capabilities (no textures, very low poly count, etc). So modern graphics cards result in 1000+ FPS. However, on our slow machines, this particular criticism is less of an issue, because it tends to turn in FPS on the order of 10-30 fps.
