be sure to start Vim with the "-b" option so that line endings aren't mangled
optional options:
- start with "-R" for read-only mode
- set wrap
- set textwidth=0
- set display=uhex
g ctrl-g displays the current byte position
in insert or replace modes, ctrl-v can be used to insert characters of a specific decimal/hex/oct
