In America

• Pushing the nuclear family as the exclusive option. This displaced multi-generational living & chosen family that sociologists tell us were the norm in the past, and that continue to be common in other cultures.

  • The consensus among sociologists is that the nuclear family wasn't the most common option historically, and isn't the most common outside of the West:   [1] [2] [3]
• The stranger danger myth, that makes us default to being afraid of someone.
  • This led to helicopter parenting being very common in the US, compared to free-range parenting that's much more common elsewhere.
  • 'Stranger danger' is so pervasive that it's nearly illegal to allow your teenager to roam in the US like they do in Europe.
• The decline of social clubs [2] and civic organizations.

• Greatly weakening the power of labor unions in the US.
• United States is on the extreme end of the individualism/communitarianism spectrum.
• The decline in construction and use of porches, due to widespread adoption of air conditioning in the 1940s.
• The rise in remote work as a result of COVID, which led to reduced socialization and worsened mental health outcomes.

Nazi Germany

• The government-backed German Labour Front was created to replace the independent labor unions that the SA had destroyed. The government then outlawed collective bargaining and striking.
