I'm a vocal advocate for elastic tabstops, or at least seeing them implemented in an editor that I can use.
- why I think it's useful
- it would allow programmers to use proportional fonts -- Knuth used proportional fonts when laying out the code in his books
- sometimes I find myself opening up Excel to rough out an idea -- if only just to lay things out in a table structure. But I don't like using something so overkill for such an easy task. Elastic tabstops, in some ways, unifies the simple text editor with spreadsheets. (granted, it doesn't include the formula processing, just the layout functionality)
