See here, Wi-Fi security is pretty bad. Part of the reason is that the primary stakeholders (homeowners, hotspot users) don't know how bad it is, while the people who have the knowledge to fix it (standards body[IEEE], equipment manufacturers) aren't pressured to do so.

So, it would be a good idea to contribute to wifi-cracking tools. Mainly, I'm interested in making them 1) easier to use, and 2) more widespread. The problem isn't even that a few elite underground hackers know the secrets and nobody else does. Rather, the problem is that lots of experts have been complaining about the problems for a while, and nobody is listening.
