The idea presented here, of a client-side-only wiki, is already implemented as TiddlyWiki.

They use the term guerilla wiki, which I really like.

Things that are showstoppers for my intended use:

the back button doesn't work! They do something weird with navigation
URLs like this are REALLY REALLY slow
- umm, you have to DOWNLOAD THE ENTIRE WIKI just to view one page! The entire wiki is 3mb...
  - not only that, but once the whole thing is loaded in memory, the javascript does several passes over the data, which makes it even slower...
- apparently TiddlyWiki was created before AJAX exited
