Places to check out:

Micro Center (near the Target) (heavily recommended by Redditors)
any of the botanicas nearby (folk Christinianity gives important insights into how easy it would be for me to create my own religion... i.e. this is introductory field work)
Bloomingdale Trail (elevated former train — may eventually be an official trail) (pictures)
- probably can't bike along it because it's unofficial/abandoned, and has lots of trash and glass along the way. But it's said to be an awesome place to walk along. It's pretty much "urban spelunking lite".

- Ash's Magic Shop, ~Western & Foster

"sushi night" (most fish stores get sushi-grade fish in once a week... you can make sushi at home that night for pretty cheap)
- Dirk's Fish & Gourmet Shop, ~Fullerton & Clybourn, they have stuff every night, but get good tuna in on Fridays
- FishGuy.com, Pulaski & Montrose,
- Isaacson & Stein Fish Co., 0.5mi north of The Loop, closes early, more oriented to restaurants
