Okay, so the building that I'm renting an apartment in IS in foreclosure. Possible things I should do:
- see if I can get a lawyer for free (per this document)
- If not, maybe pay a lawyer for at least a small sit-down session where they give me advice?
Having the word "eviction" on my record is really bad. One way to proactively try to reduce the chance of that is to 1) move out. But that has a lot of expenses associated with it as well. 2) Seeing a lawyer might make actually be a cheaper option.
- is it worth trying to ascertain Mike's financial status more?
- call police department, ask for his extension, as a semi-covert way of determining if he's still employed there? (though I suppose he COULD be employed with another police department)
- pay for one of those "background checks" online, just to get some sort of clue 1) what his real name is, 2) what his real residential address might be, 3) what properties he really owns
- [MUST] CALL MIKE, GET LEASE IN WRITING (per this document)
- [MUST] decide when I notify the other tenants of the pending foreclosure? I have a small window, during which I know about the foreclosure, but my landlord doesn't know I know, when I might have some extra leverage (or at least extra wiggle room) I wouldn't otherwise have. As soon as I let the other tenants know, they could very well scream at the landlord.
