June 24, 2009 — Lucio Martínez, the head of police precinct #14 (Humboldt Park area) was demoted in the wake of a murder and a stabbing during the annual Puerto Rican festival. John Escalante was picked as his replacement.
June 16 - 21, 2009 — Fiestas Puertorriqueñas, the annual Puerto Rican festival and parade in Humboldt Park occured
May 12, 2009 — Billy Ocasio, who was 26th Ward Alderman, was asked by the new governor Pat Quinn to become a senior advisor. At this point, the 26th Ward seat became vacant. (Pat Quinn became governor as a result of Rod Blagojevich stepping down) (in the meantime, Héctor Villagrana will perform many of the same duties until a mayor Richard M. Daley chooses a replacement alderman)
