Some basic setup I do to make my hardware keyboard work:
- install External Keyboard Helper Pro
install Terminal IDE to be able to SSH places
- install JuiceSSH to be able to SSH places
- make the Caps-Lock key work as Escape (for Vi)
- External Keyboard Helper > Advanced Settings > Override special keys = Yes
- External Keyboard Helper > Advanced Settings > Customize keyboard mappings > Add new
- click "Change" scancode
- press the caps-lock key
- now, alt-tab to another app, and press the caps-lock key ONCE
(if you don't do this, the caps-lock key will be stuck down until you reboot)
- alt-tab back to External Keyboard Helper
- Keycode = Escape
- make Windows+K pop up the IME-changer (to make it easier to change to External Keyboard Helper)
- External Keyboard Helper > Advanced Settings > Application Mode > Show input method selector
- install QCustomShortcut
- create an icon that lets you get to the QuickLaunch settings, see here
- open the QuickLaunch settings, and set Windows+K to open External Keyboard Helper
Apple Keyboard settings
I also like to set a few keys that are specific to the Apple Keyboard (the bluetooth wireless one)
- right alt/option = Menu
- ▲ = Home
