Are there cheaper sergers that are acceptable, or is it better to save the money / put the money towards a good non-serger sewing machine?

a serger does not replace a sewing machine, it must be used in addition to a sewing machine

Things a regular sewing machine is needed for, that a serger can't do:

buttonholes
topstitching
- though some (higher-end) sergers can do coverstitching
sewing standard seams (pressed, open seams)
zippers
- no.... this says you can do zippers okay
