log of recommendations to me

Once in a while, someone I trust recommends some great content, but I don't have time to process all of it right away. So those recommendations get logged here, so I can go back and mull them over later.

2024:

• June 22 — sociology of food — Kat and Gemma. There are many tendrils that I will want to read into much more deeply (eventually). Specific comments to focus on:
  • "Indian food reflects both the abundance of aromatic preserved botanicals in the region and the climate, and historic patterns of wealth distribution and successive changes in regime. The foodways of other regions reflect for instance a short growing season and a need for more efforts in preservation methods, or what grows regionally."
  • "in the realm of 'complex but not necessarily *spicy*' I really love Persian and Georgian food, as explorations of layering herbs and other non-spice (i.e. other parts of the plant) flavors."
  • lots of good info about sociological food history
  • "I imagine you’ll enjoy the food of a whole lot of the desi diaspora ... I don’t know how you’ll feel about Korean food
  • Gemma chimes in with some information about Filipino cuisine and others
