There seem to be several unique ways to get water out of the tank:

• overflow box, using a siphon so that you don't have to drill a hole in the glass
• drill a hole in the glass
• use a pump to actively suck water out of the aquarium
• use a sensor and electronics to turn on/off the pumps to keep the volume in the upper tank at the same level
