HOWTO avoid crowds in campgrounds:

pick the right day
- camp before Labor Day and after Memorial Day ~~(September thru May)~~
- camp on weekdays, not weekends
- camp when rain is forecasted
- AVOID HOLIDAYS
pick the right time
- wake up very early and hike ~~(or hike late in the evening)~~
- hike at night
pick the right place
- hike further down the trail than the average person
- some National Parks / Forests have less-than-average traffic [1] [2]
- even within popular National Parks, there are less-travelled roads and less-accessible trails to explore
- stealth camping is much quieter, though it's usually illegal and some view it as antisocial
