Loopback
If you can boot from a loopback rootFS, you can do some cool things.
HTTP
- gPXE ROMs support this. The benefit is that you can boot over a lossy connection. That is, TFTP is only reliable over a LAN. HTTP booting allows you to do intercontinental booting.
- some initrds use httpfs to mount the rootFS after booting
