The vast majority of the time, ARP is used for the straightforward normal use. Once in a while it's used for something else though.

gratuitous ARP (sending a request to yourself, with a dsetination MAC of ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff)
- detecting IP conflicts
- updating ARP tables
