Nocturnal lagophthalmos is the inability to close one or both eyes completely while sleeping.

It can be caused by:

• Nerve damage. This can be related to stroke or Bell's palsy. Bell's palsy can be associated with hyperacusis. Bell's palsy can be caused by Lyme disease.
• Eyelid damage. This can be related to lax eyelid syndrome (LES).

Non-surgical treatments for lagophthalmos:

• Eye drops.
• Ointment used at night to provide additional moisture.
• Tape to keep lids closed at night or patching to keep moisture in.
• Special glasses (moisture goggles) that help keep eyes moist.
• Weights you can tape to your eyelids.
