Advice on how to minimize distortion while welding:

Whenever possible, weld from the center outward on a joint or structure.
Wherever possible, alternate sides for successive passes on double-sided multipass welding.
Ideally there should be as little welding as possible in a structure, especially where thin gauge metal is involved. Weld rapidly with a minimum heat input to prevent excessive local heating
