ruler lines on a cutting board

The goal is to produce something like this cutting board [2], but using a black paint pen, doing it myself.

The reason I want to DIY this is because the selection of cutting boards that contain rulers is extremely small. I want more variety available.

HDPE

Common plastic cutting boards are made out of HDPE (high-density polyethylene). HDPE is a polyolefin, meaning it has very low surface energy, and wants to avoid bonding with adhesives or paints.

Some options for dealing with this:

• Scuff up the surface before painting it.
• Use flame treatment before applying the paint. I like to mask off the area with regular aluminum foil before applying the flame.
• Use an oil or solvent-based paint.
• use a polyolefin adhesion promoter

There are concerns whether products like those polyolefin adhesion promoters could leave semi-permanent residue that could cause problems when they come into contact with food.
