With Japanese saws, it can be especially helpful to mark and cut a small kerf around all four sides.
Tip — Start by cutting the first inch or two using a dozuki saw, and after the kerf is established, then switch to a more flexible saw. Because dozukis are backsaws, they're more rigid, easier to control, and I find myself feeling more confident with one.
