I'm astonished by how many fields use serious knots. It really is something that cross-cuts so many different activities.
Entries are only listed if they have clear preferences for certain knots, and those preferences are different from similarly-related fields. For instance, while rock climbers and arborists would seem to be doing a similar activity, they still prefer slightly different knots.
Ashley Book of Knots (c.1944) lists these occupations in Chapter 2 of the book, along with knots used by each
- archer
- artilleryman
- artist
- angler
- automobilist
- baker
- basketmaker
- bell ringer
- baloonist and parachutist
- bicyclist
- blaster
- bookbinder
- boatmaker
- burgler (specifically, the knots that they might find themselves facing, including the noose)
- butcher
- cabinetmaker
- camper and canoeist
- chandler
- carpenter
- cartman
- circus man
- cook
- climber
- cooper
