What additional techniques could be used to allow food bags to be left hanging for long periods of time?

wire rope + threaded quick link — this is something that 1) requires a lot of dexterity to open, and 2) is strong enough that bears can't get through it (really? Wouldn't that have to be awfully strong?)

Just use a fuckin' bear canister. Really.
- Hanging food doesn't necessarily dissuade racoons. The only thing that does is bear canisters.
